Role of Organic Fabrics and Natural Dyeing in Sustainable Fashion

Whether brand conscious or not, nowadays consumers like to know what their garments are made of, who made them, and where they originated from. Tags like "Made in India" and brand labels can give some information, but they don't always tell the whole story. And it's true that we often don't know much about the origins of the clothes we wear and how they were made.

The production of clothing involves significant efforts from the farmers who cultivate the materials and the artisans who bring them to life. The diligent work of local farmers, artisans, and ethical fashion brands often leads to positive impacts on society and the environment.

We believe that knowledge is power, especially when it comes to conscious and sustainable fashion. That's why we're excited to bring you this series, where we answer all your burning questions about our fabrics, natural dyes, and manufacturing process. Because we want you to be as passionate about our clothes and the planet as we are!

What fabrics are used in making our garments?

Sustainable and conscious fashion starts with the fabrics that we use. It’s a critical component of sustainable fashion or life in general. But it also has a significant impact on our health, environment, and planet. Therefore, the choice of materials we use is crucial for us. Our focus is on using materials that are environmentally friendly, renewable, biodegradable, safe, and cruelty-free.

First and foremost, the fabrics we use are pivotal to the quality and longevity of our products. We choose fabrics that are durable, comfortable, and sustainable. While there are many sustainable fabric options available, for now we have chosen to work with organic cotton as our go-to material. The cotton comes from organic farming and is GOTS certified. Fabrics made from this cotton are biodegradable and require less energy and resources to produce than synthetic textiles. We also prioritize fair trade and organic materials to ensure that everyone involved in the production process is treated with respect and fair wages.

What natural dyes are used to dye our fabrics?

We all know that the use of synthetic fabrics and chemical-based dyes can cause serious harm to the planet and the people involved in production. That's why we're proud to use natural dyes made from natural and plant-based materials. Beauty is in the details - and that's why we love natural dyes! Not only are they biodegradable, sustainable, and ethical, but they also produce a range of beautiful and one-of-a-kind shades and colours each time without contributing to a huge pile of pollution or waste.

Using natural dyes in textile production also supports traditional artisanal practices and helps to preserve cultural heritage. Many natural dyeing techniques and herbs have been used for centuries, and we're proud to be carrying on these traditions in our modern designs. For example, in our Autumn Blaze products, we've used herbs like Flame of Forest and Madder to create a vibrant orange hue and achieved a rich purple tie-dye hue in our Nebula silhouettes through a hand-marbling technique using Burnt Ash, Madder, and Sea Salt.

By choosing products that use organic fabrics, materials, and natural dyes, you're not just making a fashion statement - you're making a statement about your values and your commitment to creating a more sustainable world.

At Apanakah, we've begun our way in sustainable fashion and aiming to set an example for others to follow. So, follow along and join us in growing ethical and eco-friendly fashion for all.
